|
Abstract: |
This paper is an attempt to show the way in which Dickensian women are depicted visually in the 19th century. The two illustrations which we are going to refer to disclose a break of male dominance. The two female characters are seen as visual centres which develop relations of contrariety and contradiction with the other personages. |
Keywords: |
illustrations as syntagms, the visual semiotics of clothes, figurative dimension, visual dimension, centre(s), semiotic square. |

Abstract: |
The paper is an attempt to trace the relationship between the language of a text and the age it belongs to. The analysis of the paradigms characteristic of both the Victorian and Dickensian world – time, change, progress, position, unnaturalness and habit -, of the male selves and of some of the symbols in the novel are meant to show the relation of subjectivity, consciousness and communication to the ideology of the age, contained within the frame of -ism/ Dombeyism. |
Keywords: |
(Dickemsian /Victorian) realities, position, role, (whatness of) self, House, Dombey-sign. |

NADIA MORARASU - A LINGUISTIC APPROACH TO NAMES AND NAMING IN DOMBEYAND SON
NADIA MORARASU
University of Bacau
Issue: |
|
Section: |
|
Abstract: |
The linguistic conceptual frame of the naming process is sustained by specifications referring to the relation between “names” and “appellatives”. The first part of our paper outlines this conceptual body with a view to applying it to Dickens’s novel Dombey and Son. It focuses on personal names considered under different aspects (etymological, lexical, grammatical, stylistic, pragmatic), but there is also reference to other names (place names, names of institutions, of animals etc.) and to their functions. The last part is meant to reflect the way in which subjectivity and objectivity are implied in the naming process. |
Keywords: |
the naming process, names and appellatives, common and proper nouns, personal names, terms of address. |

|
Abstract: |
The paper tries to investigate some of Charles Dickens’s narratological choices in Dombey and Son, some of the pragmatic features which contextualize this text in the cultural framework of a narrative act. Starting from a number of theoretical considerations which are commonly labelled as narratological, the analytical effort concentrates on the particular relationships within the text and the way they are supported by linguistic matter. |

MARIANA TIRNAUCEANU - VISUAL SEMIOTICS IN DOMBEYAND SON; A PLASTIC DISCOURSE ON ILLUSTRATIONS
MARIANA TIRNAUCEANU
University of Bacau
Issue: |

Section: |
|
Abstract: |
Since, technically speaking, a drawing is, by definition, meant as connotation and the illustrator (insisted on in this paper) is, with very few exceptions, as faithful to the textual message as needed, it seems interesting to understand which modes of expression the artist chooses in order to render the message, why he prefers a particular line or shape, how he combines them, why he organizes his compositions the way he does. Image and text coexist, interrelate and complete each other, both semantically and aesthetically. |
Keywords: |
pictorial text, “pluricode” discourse, linear reading, global reading, modes of expression, plastic language, syntax. |
